PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dear Rotarians,

Let me start with a couple of Thank Yous'… Firstly Howard for taking on Bruce’s large task of setting up the BBQ, as well as his usual juggling of the roster. Secondly Tom, for stepping as a last minute guest speaker with a very interesting story.
Next key point is for Board members. Our meeting has been moved from Tuesday 3rd September to Wednesday 18th September @ 5pm. A long agenda with some key decisions which will be communicated to the members at Monday’s 23rd meeting.
Also pleased to report we have filled up our tables at both the Chatswood Trivia night and the RI President‘s dinner. I’m sure members attending will have a great night.
Only other action of note this week, is the request for nominations for the RYPEN summer camp. Youth director Philip is co-ordinating with the aim to approach a number of schools. Let Philip know if you know students 14-16 years who would benefit by attending.
This weekend I will be visiting family in NZ, and Past president Ian has agreed to chair next Monday’s meeting. Hopefully we welcome back Angelo & Sue with stories of their overseas adventures.
Yours in Rotary

ROTARY: CONNECTS THE WORLD 2019-20

Next Meeting Monday 26 August 2019 our Speaker is Kingsley Edwards from Mercy Works

Mercy Works is the development arm of the Sisters of Mercy in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

The development programs undertaken promote justice, self-reliance and support peoples and communities who are displaced or denied access to basic resources such as education, health care and social welfare.

Mercy Works is based in Sydney, from which programs are operated across Australia.  Overseas projects are run in partnership with local organisations in Papua New Guinea and Timor Leste.

Following his graduation from the University of Sydney with a Bachelors Degree in Agricultural Economics, Kingsley Edwards decided to pursue a career where his life-long passion laid – in thoroughbred breeding and racing, as a specialist equine insurance broker.
After 25 years in that industry, in 2016 his passion for social justice and his motivation to give back to the community led him to a new career in the charity sector.   Kingsley transferred his relationship-building skills developed in the corporate world to fundraising and donor relationships.
Inspired by the stories of the people whose lives are transformed by the empowerment programs of Mercy Works, last year Kingsley joined the organization as Donor Development Manager.

Last Monday's Meeting - the 26th of August 2019; was a Club Forum

Various Directors were invited by President Mark to update their advice upon their progress with Projects under their Vocation.
To top off the meeting President Mark asked PP Tom to present a special story presentation upon one of Australia's first Lottery Winners back in the 1970s.  As always, Tom enchanted those Members present and a fun time was had by all.

International Toast given by PP Howard, to the Rotary Club of Headingley, England.

Chosen in light of the recent Ashes 3rd Test - surprisingly won by England.  One of 11 Rotary Clubs in the Leeds Group of District 1040

According to their web site:

• They presently have 47 members
• They meet each week on Tuesday lunchtime at Devonshire Hall – a distinctive period building
• The Club is noted for its friendly and relaxed atmosphere
• They generally have a guest speaker each meeting, presenting on a wide range of topical subjects, some related to their special projects
• We note that they have no meeting this week – are they still celebrating the cricket win ?
• The club web site features a koala - so they appear to have some Aussie interests.

REMINDERS;
The Rotary International President is visiting Sydney!!
As you are probably aware, 2019-20 Rotary International President Mark Daniel Maloney and his wife Gay will be visiting Sydney in September 2019.   International President Mark is very keen to meet as many Rotarians as he can whilst he is here, so a special dinner will be hosted by Mark and his wife Gay, and Rotarians in Districts 9685, 9675 and 9670 are invited to attend.
This is a special opportunity for Rotarians to meet and be inspired by our world leader and at the same time enjoy a 5-star meal at one of Sydney’s premier restaurants on beautiful Sydney Harbour.   It’s very rare for us to have a World President visit us, particularly during his term of office, and we are very privileged.  This is definitely an opportunity not to be missed!
