PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

 
Dear Friends at Crows Nest
 
Our meeting last Monday was an evening meeting with good attendance. Our scheduled guest speaker was unable to attend due to a family illness. However PP Tom Sweeney stepped up and filled the gap with one of his many stories on famous people buried at Macquarie Park Cemetery. A great presentation and as we have said many times some of the best presentations come from within our club membership.
On Tuesday evening, Louise, Sue and I attended a meeting at Northbridge Rotary Club. The Rotary Club of Northbridge is developing, in partnership with Willoughby City Council, other Rotary clubs and agencies like the NSW Police, a major anti-DFV and DFV awareness project.  The Club hosted a presentation on this subject at which former DG and PP of the Richmond-Ballina Rotary Club, Dave Harmon gave a keynote presentation on this critically-important community issue.
Louise will be doing a presentation on this at our next lunchtime meeting. I feel we should all get behind this project as it covers two facets of domestic violence, one targeted at adults and the other for school students. This covers both the avenues of Community and Youth Services.
This Friday 23rd at 2pm we will be having a ticket folding and stapling session at Bravo’s in Willoughby. All welcome to join us.
On Saturday Sue and I will be attending a monthly cluster meeting.

Toast:  Mark toasted the Rotary Club of Paris
 
Guest Speaker was our own Tom Sweeney.  Tom gave us a sample of the tour he does at Macquarie Park Cemetery , where numerous famous people are buried.
We were educated about the the private life of WWI Prime Minister Billy Hughes, during his 52 years in Parliament.  Then appreciated the story of Lottie Lyall, who's love
of theatre  drove her to be a stage, silent movie star and was recognised for work against Domestic Violence.
Finally we were absolutely fascinated with the story of the kidnapping of Graeme Thorn, by Stephen Bradley - a true murder/mystery story.
