PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Hello, Members and our Rotary Friends receiving this eBulletin.

A  small turnout on Monday night (due to numerous people on holidays), missed an extremely entertaining & informative talk by President elect - Tom.
(a last minute substitute as our Guest Speaker called in sick)

Now we have locked in our Pride of Workmanship awards to be held alongside our Changeover dinner on Monday June 26th, I would ask you to consider nominations. It is important to recognise those in our community who go "Above & Beyond". Nominations to Tom please.

Finally if you could please indicate if you will attend the two meetings mid-may. Monday 15th our visit to CANTEEN - names to Kate , and Tuesday May 23rd our dinner at Northbridge names to Tom.

Have a great week. Looking forward to seeing you next Monday, for lunch @ the Unions hotel.

Yours in Rotary Service
President Ross

President Elect Tom stepped in for our sick Guest Speaker.

Tom, in an extremely interesting way with amazing pictures, took us thru the inner "workings" of the Willoughby Drama club.
Tom joined the club in 1959, and spent over 20 years as President.  Director of 78 shows, he had a few stories. He also performed in numerous shows, including alongside Hugh Jackman in an 1989 production of Paint your Wagon. Les Misérables is his favourite show.
Firstly "choosing a show", which must be Available, Affordable & Attractive. Costumes, scenery, orchestra, venue & audience are all major considerations.
As an example Priscilla, Queen of the desert took 2 years to get the rights to, then 4,000 pieces of costumes were imported from New Zealand, and the scenery build in Brisbane. With venue & scenery costs over $70,000 each, along with 18% royalties the total cost was over $300,000 with the 100+ people not being paid. Evita, Jesus Christ Superstar, Catch Me If You Can, Shrek, Fiddler on the Roof  to name few of his shows with the Sound of Music on in May, and Cats in October.  Tom acknowledged the extraordinary efforts of his wife Joy in making/obtaining all the fascinating costumes.

We Thank Tom for sharing his passion and look forward to his up coming shows.
