Today Howard gave us a brief ‘overview’ of his 2 week trip to Madagascar – a fuller, more former presentation will be given later, along with fellow Rotarian Peter of the North Gosford club.
For those who don’t know Madagascar(ex French colony) is a large island off the east coast of Africa with a population of 25million, of whom 10million live in the city, and 15million are farmers.  Howard is working with a local NGO called Thrive, who projects include daily feeding of children in the city, and supplying Ultrasounds to some villages.
The project Howard worked on was upgrading of a water supply to a village which has no power, and when the spring dries out, they have to cart (poor) water in buckets from a river. They identify a new spring requiring a 1 Km of pipe. Designing the route using GPS to ensure the water flow downhill, it then took 12 villagers 2.5days to dig the trench. After tracking & fixing a few leaks in the pipe, it was finished the day Howard left the island. Our $500 voucher was used to purchase two battery powered tools(i.e. angle grinder).
For those who have not gone to an undeveloped country, it was a great insight to their issues. Looking forward to the full presentation.

Well done & thank you Howard.
