PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Hello, Members and our Rotary Friends receiving this eBulletin.
Last Saturday night we all enjoyed a Social Fellowship Dinner at the premises of one of our members, Bill and his wife Lydia, and the District Governor and his wife Tania attended.  A great night was enjoyed by all, with door prizes, Line Dancing, and card games.  Well done to the organisers!  It was good to see not only members but their partners and families!  Rotary is changing!  Great social event!  See full photos below.
This week I mention the very important annual Red Shield Appeal, of the Salvation Army.  This year their theme is ‘Leave no one in need’  In years gone past our Club has walked the streets door knocking with others collecting donations, but nowdays, online donations have replaced door knocking, and you can donate by clicking on the link below, if you donate, you get your Tax Invoice instantly, ready for your tax return.  Salvation Army are a major player on the North Shore, helping those people who are not as ‘well healed’ as others.  Do it now! Click on this link and donate!

On Monday 27th June we have our Presidential Changeover Dinner from 6.30pm, and coupled with a presentation of ‘Pride of Workmanship Awards.   Everyone is invited, please let our Secretary know for catering purposes, see flyer below.
Our next meeting will be on Zoom on 24th May 2022, at 12.30pm and our next face to face, will be at the Union Hotel Nth Sydney on Monday 30th May at 12.30pm.
Come join us!  The food at the Union is great!

Stay safe, be careful, wear your mask!

Our Last Monday Meeting on Monday 16th May - Mary's House

RI Toast:   Angelo toasted the Rotary Club of Lafeek, Dili, Timor-Leste

Today, we spend our lunch having a chat (more questions than formal presentation) with Claire from Mary’s house. As you know Mary’s house is a refuge for women & children escaping domestic violence. It can handle 5 families including Mum & up to 4 children, and is nearly always full.

Since 2020 they also run a drop-in service hub called the Daisy Centre at Neutral Bay. This centre has case managers and has tripled the number of clients. They average 20 referral a month, but last month they had 40 referrals. The centre has arranged ‘safe rooms’ in the area, has legal sessions every Wednesday and also working with banks to ensure financial advice is available.

They are also starting to organise ‘information sessions’ which includes items like helping businesses identify signs of domestic violence. Another key area is identifying the needs of the children, who can be traumatised by the experience, so they are working with specialists to build a youth program.

We appreciated the update, and lively discussion with Claire. Since Monday’s meeting, Community Service Director, Sue, had purchased two baby monitors for Mary’s House.
