Last Meeting - Monday 18th November- Kerry Luxton
Kerry leads Fisherfolk Educational Support Project , helping to improve education for children in Kolkata fishing communities since 2016. By collaborating with local educators & families, the project funds teachers salaries, provides school supplies, offers teacher training, and addresses social issues such as literacy, child labour, and early marriage. Partnering with Kajla.org.in Kerry's work fosters sustainable development and educational opportunities, helping to break cycles of poverty and create brighter futures for these communities.
Kerry explain about her 6 educational support centres, which are in addition to the schools. Children attend before & after schools, including Saturdays , and are focused on personal development and sport. They have the challenges of Asbestos buildings, cyclones, and no Government funding. (costs the project $20,000 per year)
A key focus is educating the parents on the "Value of education", which only works by engaging the villages by meeting elders and mothers.
An inspiring North Shore housewife who spends 1-5 months there every year.
Thank you Kerry.
