PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dear Crows Nest Rotarians and friends,

A very special Meeting today, as we inducted and welcomed Anthony Jayaraj as a new Member of Crows Nest Rotary Club. Also present was Anthony’s brother Christopher making this a memorable day for our newest member.

PP Howard gave us an update on our Global Grant Application. Howard explained we are close to completing our part of the Application.

Our Guest Speaker today was Christopher Anthony Co-Founder Of Teachers on Wheels . Chris explained that he and fellow Co -Founder Denis Jacobi were inspired to begin this project by a report that more than 9000 young people in India die by suicide every year due pressure to succeed in their studies.

Their Mission “ Transform lives through quality education and skills training”. This project is in its initial phase and we look forward to hearing from Chris again.

ROMAC  representative  Bruce Robinson will update our Members on this excellent organisation next Monday.

I look forward to seeing you here.

Anthony, congratulations on your induction today.

ROTARY: BE THE INSPIRATION

Next Meeting Monday - the 27th of May, our Guest Speaker will be Bruce Robinson for a 'ROMAC' Update.

Bruce Robinson is a Charter member of the Rotary Club of Norwest Sunrise. He was previously a member of the Rotary Club of Holroyd. He has been a Rotarian for over 30 years and has held most positions at Rotary Club level including being President of both Clubs he has been a member of.

He became National Treasurer for ROMAC in 2013 and held that position for 4 years retiring in 2017. The position of Treasurer is a Board of Directors position and as such he was involved in the day to day decisions concerning accepting and bringing patients to Australia or New Zealand for life saving surgery as well as formulating plans and implementing them for the ongoing success of ROMAC.

This presentation will explain

  • “What is ROMAC” including a little bit of history
  • How patients are sourced and where they come from
  • Types of illnesses treated
  • Budget and costs of treatment
  • Example of 3 children recently treated
  • Who “owns” ROMAC and how Rotary Clubs and Rotarians can help

Last Meeting - Monday the 13th we welcomed Chris Anthony from 'Teachers on Wheels'

Last Monday, Chris Anthony from “Teachers on Wheels spoke to us. They are a newly formed NGO focused on saving lives thru education. Much to our surprise Chris reported that in 2015 over 9,000 youths committed suicide in India, mainly due to the pressure to succeed in exams.  Of those about 70% come from low educational status.

Their idea is mobile classrooms, which brings extra (weekend) education to the villages, especially where children are not allowed to go to school for various reasons. They have just started a pilot, and plan to launch in January 2020. The aim is to get students more prepared for exams, as well as prepared for if they fail. The focus is to reduce suicide rates, homework assistance and exam readiness thru boot camps.

If successful, the future will increase the scope to Teacher in the Box, Tools skill centre & Computer skills centre.

We offered to help Chris contact Rotary clubs in India for funding, and also suggested that there may be merit in looking at education of the parents (i.e. Reduce the pressure on the students to succeed).
