PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dear Crows Nest Rotarians and Friends,

Today was my last Monday Lunchtime Meeting before Changeover.  We welcomed back our intrepid travellers Bill, Harold, and Ross and enjoyed their overview of the Rotary International Convention in Hamburg, Germany.   All our attendees said that our own Rotarian Michael McQueen’s presentation at the Convention was outstanding!

Our Guest Speaker today was PDG Harold Sharp.   Harold gave us a factual overview of Rotary over the years since Rotary as an organisation began. It makes interesting reading and I encourage you to read the synopsis included in this bulletin.

On June 6th Angelo and I attended the 40th Anniversary Of Crows Nest Probus Club at a luncheon in the city.   We were made to feel very welcome by President Barbara and I enjoyed addressing the Members.  Of special note was that Crows Nest Probus Club was sponsored by our very own Crows Nest Rotary Club on the 31st of May 1979 and is the 7th oldest Probus Club in NSW and the 9th oldest of all Probus Clubs in Australia and New Zealand.    On speaking to the Members, they indicated they would like to maintain contact with our Club.

It is with a heavy heart, that I announce, Past President Celia Coote tendered her resignation from our Rotary Club today. To Celia; on behalf of the Members Of Crows Nest Rotary Club I wish to Thank You for your years of service to Rotary. We will all miss you! Celia said she will continue to do BBQ and help with fundraising and we look forward to seeing her at our future events.

On a very sad note I received an email from PP Howard Sullivan informing us of the passing of his mother.   Mrs Sullivan Snr was 100 years and 6 months old , a wonderful full life.

Howard and Wendy we extend our deepest condolences.

Changeover is next Monday Night at Northbridge Golf Club.   6.30 for 7.00pm start.   I look forward to seeing you all there as I officially handover the Club's Presidency to incoming President Elect Mark Staples.

I appreciate and sincerely wish to thank you all for your support throughout my year as President, I have enjoyed it immensely!

President Sue, Rotary Club of Crows Nest.

Next Meeting Monday the 8th July 2019; Planning for 2019-20

This is a very important Meeting, where the new President and all members discuss the work of the Club for the next 12 months.

If you are a member of our Club, or an interested party, please come along and make 2019-20 a 'Memorable Year'.

Last Meeting - Monday the 24th June, our Guest Speaker was PDG Harold Sharp, talking about the history of Rotary.

Harold spoke about; Rotary International (RI) was the first Service Club Organisation commenced in 1905, arranged by Paul Harris with four other men.  RI now has over 1,224,445 members World wide!
The first Australian Rotary Club was chartered in Melbourne in 1921.
Rotary Clubs were strictly a 'Boys Club' until women were allowed to join, in 1987.  Now, our District 9685, has 72 Clubs, and 25% are women members.
In 1928 the idea "To do good in the World", inspired the establishment of the "Rotary Foundation' (RF) and since then the RF has spent over $3.7 Billion on World wide Rotary Projects!
In 1985, RI announced the 'End Polio Campaign', and from 125 endemic countries, with Rotary's help, Polio has been to date, reduced to only 3 cases in 2019. Hopefully we will soon eradicate Polio from the World!

Our Club's most important night of the Rotary year, is our Changeover of Presidents, on Monday 1st July 2019 at 7.00pm @ Northbridge Golf Club.  Please book your seat at the Dinner and celebrations when President Sue hands over the reins to President Elect Mark Staples.   To book your seat, contact Mark as soon as possible! mkstaples@optusnet.com.au
