PRESIDENT'S COLUMN

Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

Although down on numbers this Monday, it certainly didn’t stop a lively discussion on the Guest Speaker’s  talk on Diabetes, as it was obvious a number of our group had been affected either directly or through their spouse and/or relatives. And, as we age the impact increases.
Also good to have the input of visitor, maybe even a potential member, Maggie Shanahan in the discussion. Maggie originally from the Rotary Club of Manly, and in her time there had been Club President as well as a Paul Harris Fellow. Maggie has recently relocated from the Manly area to Northbridge.
Last Saturday’s BBQ was a great success, involving more non Rotarians. Tom had two excellent new helpers in Cheryl and Walter, as well as Joy, on the morning shift, while in the afternoon, Tracy’s husband, Robert and young Lucas, helping out again. All good to see, and the assistance was most appreciated.
Congratulations to George for winning the Melbourne Cup Trifecta. Must be the luck of the Irish, especially with an Irish horse winning the Cup also.
Also, with our AGM coming up in a few weeks, I ask ALL Members to consider their involvement in the Club, as we certainly need a few member to step up. So please consider.

So, Stay and Safe

Last Meeting Monday  9th November 2020 - Diabetes Australia

Today Nader Armaneous, who has over 15 years of experience as a professional Accredited Clinical Pharmacist and Credentialled Diabetes Educator, took us thru essential knowledge required to understand Diabetes. Nader’s philosophy is to help people control their diseases not diseases controlling people!

There are three types of Diabetes (type 1, 2 & gestational) where the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. (none for type 1)
Type 1 , which is not preventable, is managed with Insulin, while type 2  - some but not enough insulin, is managed by medication and lifestyle changes.
We learnt about Hyperglycaemia(high) and Hypoglycaemia(low) blood sugar levels including causes & recommended actions. Click on National Diabetes Services Scheme website for details and more information. There hotline is 1300 136 588.
We finished the session with a healthy discussion on the pros & cons of taking medication. This opened our eyes on the impact to the patient and their family. It was also agreed that a low GI diet is the only one for diabetes.
