School for Life Foundation,Update
Oct 21, 2019
School for Life Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation working in rural Uganda. We empower communities to help. Themselves and create their own opportunities. To do that, we build schools to provide communities with a quality education, including primary and secondary schooling, vocational training and other services – such as employment and healthcare solutions. With your help we can transform developing communities in emerging countries to become educated, productive, sustainable and profitable places – where people can enjoy a healthy, happy and more prosperous future. Two young, passionate Australian entrepreneurs, Annabelle Chauncy OAM and David Everett OAM founded School For Life in 2008. Annabelle and Dave met whilst working as volunteers in Kenya, where they became convinced that education is the only real way to mobilise a community and create a positive and sustainable future. Determined to build a school in rural Uganda, Annabelle and Dave returned to Australia and raised over $500,000 in partnership with Rotary. In 2011 Katuuso Primary and Vocational School opened and welcomed its first students. |

The Tasman Map – Abel Tasman, the Dutch East India Co. and the first Dutch Discoveries of Australia
Dec 02, 2019
This story of the first Dutch voyages to discover Australia is set against the background of the struggle of the newly formed Dutch Republic to gain its independence from the Kingdom of Spain and the struggle of the Dutch East India Company for trade supremacy in the East Indies against its Portuguese, Spanish and English rivals. Over a period of only forty years from 1606 to 1644 and based on sixteen separate discoveries the first map of Australia took shape. The Tasman Map shows a recognizable outline of the north, west and south coasts of Australia that was not to change for another 125 years until the British explorer James Cook charted the east coast in 1770. It was in 1925 and 1933 that the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia, acquired both the Tasman Huydecoper Journal and the Tasman Bonaparte Map. The story of how the library managed to acquire these treasures of Dutch exploration and cartography will bring new recognition to these icons of both Dutch and Australian history. |

Potential Projects in the Democratic Republic of Congo
Apr 20, 2020
Joanna organisation has recently been speaking with our overseas ministry partners about projects that might be of interest to our club and to the international rotary body. There’s one in particular that seems to be a shining light – it’s the building of 10 flush toilets in a school for deaf people in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It’s one that Joanna has personally volunteered at for an extended period of time so can attest to the incredible work they do in a country which has enormous developmental needs – especially for children with disabilities. The school, called Ephphatha Centre for the Deaf, is based in Goma and has a pre-existing relationship with the local rotary club in Goma, who are keen to be involved in this project, so it could be a great option for international grant-matching. |
