Last week, I was invited to the Community Cabinet Meeting – which is a meeting of local community leaders with the Premier and the Cabinet; to discuss issues affecting the North Shore and Northern Beaches. The entire Cabinet of twenty three were present which I thought was quite an achievement. I advised that I thought the issue of Council amalgamations was overrated in the community and promoted a dedicated right turn lane from Castlecrag into Eastern Valley Way (a local thing). I was fortunate to have a one on one meeting with the Premier.
I might add that the invitation was addressed to ‘Celia Coote’ and the email was sent to ‘Mark Wallace @’. So if you try to convince me that the Government can coordinate and correlate all the information out there with its various services and agencies; forgive me if I remain sceptical !

MONDAY 27th March 2017 - Our Speaker is Kevin Fitzpatrick , speaking on Ernest Shackleton, A leader of men.
Kevin became interested in Antarctica and the Heroic Age of Exploration over 30 years ago. As a teacher of leadership principles he became aware of the leadership qualities shown by Ernest Shackleton that made possible the heroic escape from Antarctica. He was truly a Barrier Breaker and Leader of Men.
In 2015, 100 years since Shackleton and his 27 companions were trapped in the Antarctic ice, Kevin was fortunate to not only travel to the Antarctic Continent but to follow the exact escape route taken by Ernest Shackleton in the 'Shackleton Double', an 1300 Km open boat trip across the fiercest sea on the planet followed by an epic crossing of South Georgia in 36 hours, a time never bettered even by professional mountaineers.
LAST MONDAY's Meeting the 16th of March 2017 - the Speaker was Annona Pearse speaking on "Dark Tourism”, the interest in death, disaster and atrocity
Annona got us thinking about an area we had never heard of, let alone thought about - “Dark Tourism” which looks at Death as a commodity for consumption in the global market. Or more simply put looks at why sites like Ground Zero, Auschwitz, Cambodian Killing fields, Haiti earthquake, etc are so popular. Why do we go to these sites and how do we ensure Entrepreneurial commercialism doesn’t take over from the original intend of these sites as educational.
Annona pointed out the difference between people being tourist or mourners. How some sites were getting more commercial over the years (i.e. Souvenir shops, Tour company's reef at Long Tan (having their logo highlighted in the middle ). She successfully highlighted the fine balance to avoid commercialism and left us with the question of “:Why do we go to these places?”
We were left with some thinking to do. Annona was thanked, on behalf of Crows Nest, by Harold Sharp
