PRESIDENT PETER'S THOUGHTS -7TH of MARCH

Internationally ::Today is International Women’s Day and this theme has been promoted strongly on the radio. I heard a volunteer talking about “Days for Girls”.  Describing how it started, how they needed to change the product due to realising that the girls that they were targeting did not have the facilities to maintain fabric whiteness and that cultural sensitivities did not allow such sanitary products to be displayed in public – hence the adoption of coloureds and terry towelling products.
I was surprised that there was no mention of Rotary. So I googled the “Days for Girls” website. Again no mention of Rotary but an acknowledgement of RAWCS as an Important Sponsor. What a surprise!
Locally:: We have had four meetings at the Union Hotel with next week’s meeting also to be held there.
Well the “Smart Money” says that this will be our permanent meeting venue. The venue is a more convivial meeting place – it is more comfortable, has air conditioning, has up todate audio/visual facilities and better food. The management has been very supportive of our custom. So see you there!
Now to wrap up, we need to adopt some plans for membership growth and retention.
It would be nice to find a community programme for Crows Nest to gain local publicity, It would be positive for members to bring a potential member to a meeting and we need to approach locals about the Crows Nest to Union Hotel area to attend. This item will go to our Board Meeting in 7 days time but is a Club issue.
Yours in Rotary
Peter

LAST MONDAY's Meeting the 2nd of March 2017 - the Speaker was Harold Sharp on Club Membership
Harold made the sober observation that in general Rotary worldwide is in decline. He pointed to the following statistics:
:Rotary is involved in 220 countries
:There are 1,226,463 Rotarians in 35,434 clubs in 530 Districts.
: Australia is 11th in the world for membership (28,882 members or 2.4% of the world membership)
:USA is 1st followed by India, Sweden is 14th.
:Australia is 5th in the number of members it is losing. USA is 1st .
: India is 1st in list of increasing membership, Philippines is 6th in the list of increasing membership.
:However Membership overall has not increased in the past 20 years.
:At the present rate of decline by 2025 Australia may not have any operating Rotary clubs.
Harold then made the strong point that all members must do their best to recruit new members. However, how this could be achieved is argumentative. Methods used in the past do not seem to be working in the 21st century.
The harsh reality for ours ,and all other clubs,is that without a strong membership strategy we will not survive.Something we all need to be proactive about

Vote of Thanks by John Saunders
