PRESIDENT PETER'S MUSINGS

Monday’s meeting was an interesting meeting, pleased to be able to catch up with a number of members we have not seen for a while. The Christmas – January holidays are great for doing that.

Our speaker Phil Burge from the Prostate Cancer Foundation was a great “no bullshit” speaker – to quote Tom in his thank you appraisal. Cyril again gave a great choice of International Toast.

Our announcements dealt with the RYLA Course and dinner. Harold and Gina represented our Club at the sold out dinner. Harold reported that our candidates were fine young people who were a credit to the Club.
Incidently Harold has completed 40 years of active service in Rotary – 20 years at the RC of Crows Nest. WELL DONE !
The other announcement that is pertinent is that District is requesting urgent commitment  for the District Conference to be held at Penrith Panthers on March 11, 2017.  So far 3 members have indicated that they have booked for the Conference, we would like more please..
Harold as our Sergeant at Arms extracted numerous fines and suggests that you all carry more money for fines in future!
We had a few technological faults – so we had no visuals accompanying the speaker – my advisers tell me that the Speaker’s laptop was at fault. We also had a bit of a change of plans regarding various meeting duties due to discrepancies between our list of duties and the presence / absence of some members.
Next week, we have our own Speaker, David Stewart from the Butterfly Foundation.
A final item – our 1st January Subscriptions are due – please expect an invoice from the Treasurer. Subs are $120..00 for Members and $175.00 for Corporate Members. Bank Details WESTPAC  BSB 032-298 A/c Rotary Club of Crows Nest 394298.

MONDAY 23rd January - Our Speaker is David Stewart, Butterfly Foundation

David joined Butterfly in late 2015 and has worked in the trustee services sector for 25 years. Over recent years he has been heavily involved in philanthropy including being a volunteer board member on the ANZ staff Foundation for 10 years, assisting clients to commence their own structured giving vehicles. David is responsible for all areas of fundraising at Butterfly and is keen to utilise his skills to ensure its future is secure
LAST MONDAY's Meeting

Our Speaker on Monday 16th January was Phil Burge, an Ambassador for both the NSW Cancer Council and the Prostrate Cancer Foundation of Australia.  He was introduced by Mark Staples.
Phil is a retired professional civil engineer and a prostate cancer survivor of some 7 years now. During that time he has been involved in various volunteer roles including peer support counselling, research community representation, and media interviews.
Phils presentation took us through his journey from his initial diagnosis.  He was considered to be of high risk as his father had prostate cancer and died from the disease so when he obtained a series of escalating elevated PSA readings he promptly chose to have a biopsy and on confirmation that he had prostate cancer, chose to have surgery to remove the prostate rather than the alternative of radiation treatment.
Phils advice to all men over 50 is to have regular annual medical check-up with PSA blood testing and also DRE.
He also advised that diet can have a role in reducing risk of all cancers such as plentiful fruit and veg to increase the anti-oxidants in the diet.
A lively question time followed the presentation and Phil was thanked by Tom Sweeney.
