PRESIDENT PETER'S Thoughts

I went to an interesting Investment Seminar last week, where the Speaker lamented the present state of Australia. Sure we have had quarter after quarter economically without a recession – the envy of the Western World, but what have we achieved with all these good times?
Then he mentioned Asia and the incredible growth that has taken place throughout Asia. Singapore was an insecure island state – look at what they have achieved. Singapore is regarded as a global hub ahead of Sydney.  China has prospered to create a middle class and is urbanising and educating its huge population. India has a higher percentage of University graduates than any other country. Malaysia’s GDP is increasing at 6% annually. What has happened to the “Lucky Country”?
Sure we have had good times , survived the GFC of 2008 relatively intact and kept digging up OZ to send overseas but we have not progressed like Asia, we have not educated our people, we have not grown like Asia.
This reinforces Tim Dodd’s view that Asia is our future so we had better get involved.
But do not worry, we are Australians and “She’ll be right, mate!”
Yours in Rotary

Peter

Get ready to “defy gravity” – the worldwide musical sensation, WICKED, is coming to Willoughby Theatre Company and The Concourse in May 2017!!
With music and lyrics by the legendary Stephen Schwartz, Wicked has been running continuously on Broadway for 13 years and on the West End for decade. Now, it’s back home in ‘Oz’.
Thank you! You are wicked! By purchasing tickets to this performance, not only will you receive $10 off the normal ticket price, you will also be supporting me, Philip Hojgaard-Olsen to fulfill my dream to help young Australians with a disability make a difference in our world.
I am 18 and have Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, so I know what it’s like to be a young person with a disability. I also know what it’s like when you find your purpose and the right support to have a productive life that contributes back to the community. That’s why I am going on a study tour in 2017, to bring back from Denmark the latest, most innovative ways to fundraise, know-how to build integrated living communities and help disabled young people achieve their goals. My dream is to become an ambassador for young Australians with a disability, and to help Muscular Dystrophy NSW find new ways to fundraise so they can continue their vital work.
Thank you again for supporting my wicked dream, and I hope you enjoy the show.
Philip
