PRESIDENT PETER'S MOMENT

Hi fellow Rotarians,

Well the last day of Winter and how good is it!

I had thought to discuss with you the ramifications of holding a “Double Dissolution” to remove a tiresome “hung” senate.  The point being that in the new election every senator was up for re-election but thus only needing half the quota to be re-elected. Then we could discuss the composition of the resulting senate ---BUT I rejected that because it is politics.

I thought of debating the presence of mosques in north shore suburbs BUT again I rejected that because it was religious.

Then I saw an article complaining of a vulgar advertisement – a lingerie store had the temerity to run a silent film in their lingerie store about lingerie – they actually had models wearing it – Heaven forbid – I rejected that too because it involved sex.

So members what to discuss? Our Club.  September will be a quiet month for the Club – I know of eight members who will be away at various times. This will make it difficult to staff the BBQs.

We have preparatory work to do, so that we will be organised for the Crows Nest Festival on 16 October. Phoenix House will link up with us on that day and I have shrewdly requested Michelle to be part of our team!  I hope that the Butterfly Foundation may also join with us too. We plan to sell popcorn and give children balloons since the organisers have said NO to a Rotary BBQ - Alon has undertaken to coordinate activities

Mark Staples’ Poker night is at the end of October also and that should separate the hoardersfrom the entrepreneurs in the Club. Thankfully there will be a school for poker prior to the night.

We also have to collect business cards from Crows Nest Business’s for our November Gathering for potential new members. Tom, Jennifer and Michael will need some support – so expect a tap on the shoulder soon.

With the first Monday of October being a holiday, time will fly.

Last Monday, Sue gave a thoughtful talk regarding how the Club could raise its profile in the Local Community. This year, We have donated $1000 to the Baptist Church to help fund their Community Herb Garden Project-plus Bill has offered them herbs from his Artarmon Garden.Sue noted that our signage was out of date and poorly positioned.  Sue also wanted to involve the Club with the Crows Nest Centre and homeless people in the area. Further She suggestedhelping RNS Treasure Chest for children. More below.

Next week, Sue, Angelo, Ian, Celia and I are off to Timor Leste whilst Timor Leste and Australia square off in The Hague over maritime boundaries and oil.

Yours in Rotary

Peter

OUR MEETING LAST MONDAY
Sue Raveanne Aug 29, 2016
Community Service Director at Crows Nest Rotary
Community Service Director at Crows Nest RotaryLast Monday the Rotary Club of Crows Nest continued it excellent program of interesting Speakers at each Monday meeting.  Sue grew up in rural NSW. Upon completing a degree in Bio Med Science from the University of Technology Sydney, Susan worked in the pathology departments in various Sydney hospitals   She then spent a number of years doing research at Sydney University with the Dairy Industry Authority    She then changed career and worked as a retail store manager in pharmacy for the past 20 years before retiring 3 years ago.
Susan is one of the Club's GURU Rotarians! And, her speech last Monday was a reminder to all, Rotarian and non-Rotarian, that members of the Crows Nest community, Rotarians alike, have a responsibility to nurture 'Our Community'.
Sue has a program of projects for her year as 'Community Service Director', and she espoused her need for ideas and assistance with her list of community items too many to mention in detail here but, help from fellow Rotarians is essential with Sue's programs this year!

A suggestion was made to include Sue and her program of community items, in each month's Club Forum discussions. So we'll hear from Sue regularly each month on her progress.
