PRESIDENT PETER'S MOMENT

President Peter’s Musing’s

This Monday, I thought a very friendly happy meeting. We had a very interesting speaker, a former RYLA participant, Matt Cannon. Matt is a local guy, who trained as a paramedic and nurse before ending up in the administrative wing of NSW Ambulance. However of late he has accepted a role in Papua New Guinea to improve their health service prior to international sporting events. More on this below.->

We also had another guest , Nuzhat Latif from Karachi, Pakistan.  She has retired after 32 years in school administration. Her son lives locally and she hopes to visit us between life in Pakistan and Sydney.

Unfortunately Tiff was an apology due to a DVT necessitating a trip to the doctor - we wish her well.  Simon was also an apology as his 85 year old mum is ill, and needs support - hope all goes well Simon.

Des Seeto has advised that he is off to the UK with his partner.

Bruce has rightfully complained that various items of our BBQ equipment are either missing or lost after the last BBQ, which is annoying to say the least but means we need to have a guide (ie. Cheat Sheet) on how to set the BBQ up and how to clean up afterwards.

Tomorrow I am off to Timor Leste together with Celia,  Ian, Sue and Angelo. We hope to get our planned Global Grant in Timor organised with the northern Australian Rotary District and the new Rotary Club in Dili.

Unfortunately this trip will create some difficulties in the management of the Club.  Celia and I will be away until 7 October ; Ian will be away until 13 October , so I have asked PP Bruce  to run the Oct 12 meeting. Bruce is unable to confirm at this stage so John Saunders has kindly offered to backup  if required – Thank you John for stepping up.

PP Ian will assume control of the meetings after that till my return.

September and October will be busy months – we need to organise our Crows Nest Festival presence and our New Member Introduction Night.

Yours in Rotary

Peter

OUR MEETING LAST MONDAY

NSW Ambulance and PNG Ambulance Service

NSW Ambulance and PNG Ambulance Service
Sep 05, 2016
Matthew Cannon
NSW Ambulance and Pappua New Guinea (PNG) Ambulance Service

Once again, the Rotary Club of Crows Nest continues it's program of excellent midday Speakers at it's meetings, thanks to our Program Director, Mark Warr.

Mat Cannon is a 2010 graduate of the Rotary Youth Leadership Award and Young Citizen of the year 2008 Ku-Ring-Gai.   He attended school at Knox Grammar and commenced a Bachelor of Nursing in 2008 at the University of Technology.  In 2010 he  commenced  his paramedic training with NSW Ambulance.

Mat has been a volunteer with St. John since joining Hornsby division as a cadet in 2003.  12 years on he is a qualified paramedic, registered nurse and completing a Masters of Public Health and Master of Health Service Management at the UNSW. Mat has worked for NSW Ambulance as a paramedic, been an advisor for the Minister of Health as Minister Liason Office, undertaken research for St John in Canada and developed clinical protocols for NSW Ambulance.

Mat's presentation explained about his role in the Ambulance Service in PNG.   Mat was a special envoy to PNG helping St John Ambulance during the Pacific Games in Port Moresby 2015.  St John's PNG is a statutory body and the Ambulance service for the PNG Government.  After a six month secondment, Mat was asked by the Chair of St John PNG to return help redesign and redevelop the service. Mat was appointed Chief Staff Officer of St John PNG providing technical advice to the ambulance service and helping to prepare it to provide emergency support to the APEC Leaders summit in 2018.  This role has challenged him both professionally and personally.   Club members commended Mat for his dedication and role in the provision of ambulance services to PNG.
