In March 2017, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced the concept alignment for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link project.  If built, this major transport infrastructure project would deliver a new motorway that would increase cross-harbour transport capacity, provide a traffic bypass of the Sydney CBD and take pressure off the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

The Beaches Link component would address Sydney’s slowest public transport route, bypass the traffic lights of Mosman and also draw traffic away from the Roseville Bridge.  Western Harbour Tunnel would run from WestConnex at the Rozelle interchange, cross under Sydney Harbour and link into the Warringah Freeway.  Beaches Link would run from the Warringah Freeway, pass beneath Middle Harbour near The Spit and emerge with interchanges at Seaforth and Balgowlah.

Since March, the project team has directly engaged with over 4,500 people and extracted several kilometres of geotechnical core samples as they work towards development of a Reference Design – which the NSW Government has undertaken to release by mid 2018.

Steve Brien has over 25 years’ experience working on major transport infrastructure, including Sydney Metro, Countrylink, State Rail, the Eastern Distributor, Cross City Tunnel, M2, M5 East Motorways and the Anzac Bridge. He was also Head of Communications for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Games, dubbed the “Best Games Ever”.  Steve is the Senior Communication and Stakeholder Engagement lead for the Western Harbour Tunnel and Beaches Link Project.
