Men's Shed
Feb 20, 2017
Terry O'Mara will be speaking about Rotary and Mens Sheds. Terry will explain how his club identified a need for something for men to be involved with once they’ve retired or been widowed as there is a lot available for women, single or otherwise, but nothing to address men’s health and wellbeing. They pointed out that there were many grown up men who were at a loss for something to do and Council agreed. After a well attended meeting Rotary held for interested men, the Hill’s Men’s Shed was started after much discussion and Council eventually There are now 930 Men’s Sheds in Australia whose members have skills that are diminishing in the world today. Terry said that anyone who wanted to start a Men’s Shed should get information from Council but should not let Council run the project as it is vital for the members to be empowered and independent. The Federal Government has invested $6 million for men’s health - physical, social and mental. We need to give value to their lives.Terry assured us that Rotary gave information and expertise but has not expended any monies. A manual of how to set up a Men’s Shed is available on the Internet. |

Angel Flight
Feb 27, 2017
Rod's first flying experience was in gliders in 1974. At the time it was all he could afford to fly. He has since progressed to small single engine aeroplanes and then on to light twins. Rod joined Angel Flight in 2005and since that time had flown all over NSW either bringing paeengers into Sydney from regional areas or returning them home. These people need to travel to the city for medical assistance that is not available in their own home towns. Mostly we see these people recover from their illness over a number of trips The service that Angel Flight provides not only includes the Flight but pickup and drop off at the airport to and from the city facility by 'Earth Angels'. The picture attached show a young girl with her family from. Coffs Harbour who is incredibly relaxed considering she had extremely brittle bones that could break even as she turned in bed. |

Mar 27, 2017
Kevin became interested in Antarctica and the Heroic Age of Exploration over 30 years ago. As a teacher of leadership principles he became aware of the leadership qualities shown by Ernest Shackleton that made possible the heroic escape from Antarctica. He was truly a Barrier Breaker and Leader of Men. In 2015, 100 years since Shackleton and his 27 companions were trapped in the Antarctic ice, Kevin was fortunate to not only travel to the Antarctic Continent but to follow the exact escape route taken by Ernest Shackleton in the 'Shackleton Double', an 1300 Km open boat trip across the fiercest sea on the planet followed by an epic crossing of South Georgia in 36 hours, a time never bettered even by professional mountaineers. |

Life as a Qantas 747 captain.
Jun 26, 2017
Craig graduated from High School in 1961 and enrolled in the University of British Columbia in Pre Med. He decided to leave that and proceeded to major in Math and Physics. At the end of his 3rd year he decided that this degree would limit his future, so he spoke to his father who was a captain with Canadian Pacific Airlines, based in Lima Peru. His father agreed to fund his flying training, so Craig proceeded After he got his private license, he needed a total of 200hours of flight time and exams to get his commercial license. He went to Lima where a friend had a light plane which Craig flew around Peru to build up the required 200 hours. He then returned to Vancouver, did the flight tests and drove to Ontario and was offered a job flying a Cessna on floats. He then went back to UBC to complete his degree. Late in 1965 Qantas went around the world recruiting pilots and was hired to start training in Sydney in June 1966. Started as a second officer on the DC 4 flying to Norfolk Island and Auckland. Then the 707 and on to the 747 as a first officer in 1972. Became a captain on the 747 in 1984 and retired off the 747-400 in 2004 at 60 years of age. |
